In her first interview with several international media outlets including Reuters, AFP, and The Independent on Wednesday, Sheikh Hasina made it clear that there is no question of her apologizing for the July massacre. If the next election is held without the Awami League, millions of party leaders and activists will boycott that vote. She will not return to the country during the government formed through the elections excluding her party, but will stay in India.
She said that the next government must have electoral legitimacy. Millions of Awami League supporters, if such a situation exists, will not participate in the elections. If you want an effective political system, you cannot deprive millions of people of their right to vote.
Sheikh Hasina said that despite the political turmoil, the Awami League will return to play its role for the country, be it in the government or the opposition, and her family does not need to lead for this.
However, in an interview last year, Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajib Wazed Joy had said that if the party wants, he can consider leading it.
Terming Sheikh Hasina’s interview in the international media as a new move and conspiracy by India against Bangladesh, international and political analysts said that Delhi is trying to destabilize Bangladesh in addition to thwarting the upcoming elections, keeping in mind the verdict in the case against Sheikh Hasina. Various groups within Bangladesh may be involved in this conspiracy.
Analysts also said that India will be under some kind of pressure if Hasina is convicted in the case. Considering this, Delhi took the initiative to broadcast Hasina’s statement in the international media before the verdict.
Ever since Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power in the July revolution last year and fled to India, Delhi has made one attempt after another to destabilize Bangladesh in various ways. Sometimes it has tried to destabilize Bangladesh by falsely accusing minorities of atrocities, sometimes by creating tension through killings on the border, and sometimes by leaking audio recordings of Hasina’s provocative speeches.
A political office has also been set up for Hasina in Delhi. This political office was set up under the planning and direct supervision of India’s ‘deep state’, or intelligence agency, with the aim of communicating with party leaders and activists and conducting various political activities in the future. Indian policymakers are referring to the office as Hasina’s secretariat. The secretariat has been set up for her in the same secure building in Delhi where Hasina is staying, which is shrouded in tight security. This secretariat has all the facilities, including modern communication facilities.
Along with Hasina, India has given shelter to hundreds of Awami League leaders, including top generals involved in disappearances, murders and the July massacre, senior police officers, and civil servants involved in various crimes. These criminals are sitting in Kolkata and are involved in various anti-Bangladesh activities under the supervision of Indian intelligence agencies.
Indian policymakers had the idea that under continuous pressure, the interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus would be forced to come to an agreement with India and that it would be possible to easily restore Delhi’s hegemonic influence lost in the July Revolution by rehabilitating Hasina and the Awami League in Bangladeshi politics. But in reality, nothing happened. Dr. Yunus came out of the Delhi-controlled foreign policy and adopted an independent and balanced foreign policy. Chhatra League has been banned as a terrorist organization. Awami League activities have also been banned. After all, Hasina’s trial for genocide is now in its final stages.
