Muktadesh Desk: Israel has attacked Gaza again despite announcing that it will resume the ceasefire. This time, two people have been killed. Earlier, more than a hundred people were killed in the attack on Tuesday night.
The United Nations has called on all parties not to abandon peace efforts in such a situation. Al Jazeera reported this information in a report on Thursday (October 30).
Al Jazeera reported that Israel has attacked Gaza again despite demanding that the ceasefire be re-imposed. The Al-Shifa Hospital authorities said that two people were killed in the attack in Beit Lahia in northern Gaza on Wednesday evening. Israel claimed that they attacked a place where weapons were stored and that they posed an immediate threat to their soldiers.
The attack has thrown the fragile ceasefire in Gaza into uncertainty again. Earlier, Prime Minister Netanyahu ordered a “strong retaliatory attack” after an Israeli soldier was killed in the Rafah area in southern Gaza last Tuesday. The Gaza Health Ministry said 104 people were killed in the attack, most of them women and children.
Israel said it had targeted senior Hamas fighters and killed dozens of fighters. It then announced a ceasefire on Wednesday afternoon. It then carried out another strike that evening.
US President Donald Trump said the ceasefire was not in danger despite the latest attacks. On the other hand, the mediator country Qatar expressed disappointment at the attack but said it remained hopeful that the ceasefire would move to the next stage.
In such a situation, Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said in a statement on Wednesday that Guterres condemned the Israeli airstrikes on civilians in Gaza. Many children were also killed in the attack.
UN human rights chief Falkar Turk said the news of such a large number of casualties was “horrifying”. He also called on all parties to not let peace slip away. The UK, Germany and the European Union also made the same call.
Hamas said in a statement that its fighters had nothing to do with the incident in Rafah that killed an Israeli soldier. It also reiterated its commitment to the ceasefire. However, it announced that it would suspend the process of returning the body of a dead Israeli prisoner due to the recent attacks.
Hamas said that if Israel continues its new attacks, it will hinder the recovery of the prisoners’ bodies.
Meanwhile, Israeli authorities have officially banned Red Cross representatives from meeting with Palestinian prisoners, claiming that such visits could pose a security risk.
Hamas called the ban a violation of the prisoners’ rights. It said that the ban had been in effect during the war and was part of Israel’s ongoing policy of killing, torture and starvation.
