WhatsApp will soon be introducing ‘Passkey’ support for chat backups. Through this, users will be able to encrypt their chat backups more securely.
WhatsApp has informed that this new feature will gradually reach all users.
A passkey is basically a digital key, which is much more secure and user-friendly than a conventional password. It is not stored on any web server. Rather, users can easily access their data using a 4-digit PIN code, face ID or fingerprint.
A WhatsApp statement said, ‘The way users protect their personal chats and calls with passkeys, now the same security feature is available for chat backups; So that your data is always safe, accessible and only for you.’
Note that initially WhatsApp chat backups were not encrypted. Later, in 2021, encryption was introduced for backup security. At that time, users had to access the backup using a password or 64-character encryption key.
However, the problem with this was that if the password or key was forgotten, the backup could not be restored. The new passkey feature will eliminate that complication. From now on, there will be no need to remember any complicated codes.
