Chittagong: A Chhatra Dal activist named Md. Sajjad (22) was killed in a shootout between two factions of the Jubo Dal in Chittagong late at night. At least 15 people were injured in the incident.
The shooting incident took place at around 2 am on Monday (October 27) in the Bogar Bilmukh area of Baklia Access Road in the city.
The deceased Sajjad is a follower of Emdadul Haque Badsha, the former organizing secretary (expelled) of the defunct committee of the Nagar Jubo Dal.
Police and party sources said that the clash between the two parties started over the tearing of banners. The deceased Sajjad was a follower of Emdadul Haque Badsha, the expelled organizing secretary of the defunct committee of the Nagar Jubo Dal. The other party was the followers of Gazi Siraj Ullah, the former president of the Nagar Chhatra Dal.
When asked about the shooting, Baklia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ikhtiyar Uddin said at around 2:30 am that the incident was triggered by tearing down a banner. One person was killed in the shooting. Several others were injured. A drive is underway to arrest those involved in the incident.
Party sources say that Jubo Dal activist Md. Jasim, a follower of Emdadul, was taken away by Siraj’s followers Borhan Uddin and Nazrul Islam Sohel on Monday night over the incident.
Jasim told reporters that Chattogram City Corporation Mayor and former president of the city BNP Shahadat Hossain used his picture to order the removal of banners hung by terrorists and extortionists in different parts of the city. Then he removed the banners put up in different areas including Baklia. Among them was Borhan’s banner with pictures of Shahadat and Siraj. Angered by this, a group of 8 to 10 people picked him up last night, detained him and beat him up.
Party sources also say that when news of Jasim’s detention spread, Emdadul’s followers went to rescue him. At that time, shots were fired at them on the Baklia Access Road. Later, when Sajjad was brought to the hospital in an injured condition, the doctor declared him dead. He was shot in the chest.
When asked, Emdadul said that Borhan had hung banners with Siraj’s picture. When he took down the banners on the orders of Mayor Shahadat, Borhan’s followers caught Jasim. When he went to rescue him, they shot him.
In this regard, Siraj said last night that Borhan and Sohel are not his followers. He is now busy with the upcoming elections in Patiya. He has not had any contact with Borhan and Sohel since he heard about the bad news.
Meanwhile, his mother Farida Begum rushed to the hospital at night to see the deceased Sajjad. She said, “Why did you shoot my son?” We want justice for his killers.’
Mohammad Imran, brother of the deceased Sajjad, said that his brother was involved in Chhatra Dal politics. He wants his brother’s killers to be hanged.
