Muktadesh Desk: A section of students have pasted a banner reading ‘Central Rice Hotel’ at the gate of the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAKU) Central Students’ Union (BAKU) office, which has been inactive for 27 years. The banner was pasted at the BAKU building of the university on Sunday (October 26) night.
In this regard, Rupayan Bhuiyan, a student of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, said, ‘My friends and I have put up the banner ‘Central Rice Hotel’. Because despite the various changes in the country’s politics during this long period, this building has not been of any use to the welfare of the students.’
He also said, ‘It is the fundamental right of every student to be able to practice democracy in the university. From that point of view, we have been deprived of the democratic right of students to express their opinions for 27 years. We want our rights to be restored through the Student Union, i.e. BAKU. Those who will talk about the rights of students and dream of building a new Bangladesh.’
Mentioning that the last BACU election was held in 1998, Rupayan Bhuiyan said, ‘Since then, there has been a long 27-year stalemate. But different party governments have come to power at different times. The administrations of those party governments have not held student council elections in any campus across Bangladesh. Because they are afraid of the activities of the students.’
He further said, ‘Baku University is still being engineered in such a way that BACU will not be held, because they think that this will reduce their party dominance. We want to clearly state that the full schedule of BACU must be announced immediately.’
According to university sources, BACU elections have been held regularly since the establishment of the university until 1998. Even though a long 27 years have passed since then, BACU elections have not been held again.
