Muktadesh Desk: The court has ordered the freezing of 46.463 million shares in Meghna Bank in the names of three persons with interests in former Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Jabed.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md. Sabbir Faiz issued this order on Tuesday (November 18).
The three persons are – former director of Meghna Bank PLC Imrana Zaman Chowdhury, managing director of Steadfast Management Trading Limited Utpal Pal and director Nasim Uddin Mohammad Adil.
CID Police’s Financial Crime SI Md. Nafizur Rahman filed this application seeking the freezing of shares.
The application states that the accused persons, in collusion with each other, purchased shares worth Tk 59.95 crore in Meghna Bank PLC by sending them abroad and bringing them back to the country with the aim of legalizing their illegally acquired money and using different bank accounts to hide or conceal the illegal source. Accused Md. A total of 13 lakh 40 thousand 510 US dollars were brought to Bangladesh from Singapore and Dubai through Abul Kasem.
Later, this money was transferred to the bank account of Imrana Zaman Chowdhury and Steadfast Management Trading Limited through cash checks. An account was opened in Community Bank PLC to purchase shares in Meghna Bank PLC with the deposited money. Later, a total of 59 crore 95 lakh taka was transferred.
If the shares in the names of the three accused in Meghna Bank PLC are not blocked, the accused can easily withdraw the money by selling these shares and try to misappropriate it. It is absolutely necessary to block the shares in the names of the accused in the interest of conducting the investigation smoothly.
