The government has taken a policy decision to establish an independent public university named ‘Dhaka Central University’ by merging seven government colleges in the capital, including canceling their affiliation with Dhaka University (DU). This information was given in a notification sent by the Public Relations Department of the Ministry of Education on Tuesday (November 18) afternoon.
The Ministry of Education says that this initiative has been taken with the aim of quality education, conducting timely examinations, publishing results quickly and increasing administrative efficiency. The operation manual of the interim administration has also been approved for the admission, registration and teaching of students for the 2024-25 academic year. Based on this, the admission process for students for the 2024-25 academic year has been completed and the date for the start of classes has been set for November 23.
The notification said that as part of the preparation for the establishment of an independent university, the Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) formulated a draft of the Dhaka Central University Ordinance 2025 and sent it to the Secondary and Higher Education Department. The draft ordinance was published on the website of the Secondary and Higher Education Department on September 24, and more than 5,000 opinions have been collected from students, teachers and stakeholders. Each opinion received is being reviewed in terms of legality and reality, and the draft has been re-evaluated and revised. The ministry believes that by following this statutory procedure, it will be possible to reach a universally acceptable and integrated decision.
It said that although it will take time to complete the overall process including finalizing the ordinance, the Secondary and Higher Education Department is aware that the educational activities of students should not be disrupted. An interim administrator has already been appointed to manage educational and administrative functions until the proposed university is established.
The notification further said that the Ministry of Education considers this activity as a very important step in improving the quality of higher education in the country and has pledged to ensure the fair interests of all stakeholders. The ministry has urged everyone not to create confusion based on personal ideas or rumors.
