Muktadesh Desk: India is setting up a new army base very close to the Bangladesh border. The country’s army has laid the foundation stone of this base in Dhubri district of Assam state, just 30 kilometers from the border.
This new base is being built very close to India’s strategically important ‘Chicken Neck Corridor’. The corridor connects the northeastern states with the mainland, which is very important from the point of view of India’s defense.
The Indian media Times of India reported that Lieutenant General R. C. Tiwari, head of the Army’s Eastern Command, laid the foundation stone of the new base on Thursday. The base has been named “Lachit Borphukan Military Station.”
Indian Army spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel M. Rawat said, “The new base will play a significant role in enhancing the regional operational capabilities and infrastructural strength of the army.”
According to the ‘Assam Tribune’, the base is being built on 196 bighas of land in Saptagram of Bilasipara revenue circle in Dhubri. It will house about 1,500 army personnel, including members of India’s special forces Para SF unit.
Earlier, the closest Indian army base to the Bangladesh border was in Mossimpur in Silchar, which is located about 80 kilometers from the border. This time, that distance has been reduced significantly with the new base in Dhubri.
In the context of the ongoing political unrest in Bangladesh, the Indian Army has recently opened another new military base in the North Dinajpur district of West Bengal. Analysts believe that these steps indicate new tensions in the border area.
