Muktadesh Desk: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed concern that the country’s enemies are trying to raise their heads again. He said this after a discussion meeting at the BNP central office in the capital on Sunday.
Mirza Fakhrul said, November 7 is a very important day for us and the entire nation. In today’s political context, when people are in uncertainty and despair, the country’s enemies are trying to raise their heads again, creating anarchy, and spreading false propaganda on social media. In this situation, the spirit of unity of November 7 is even more relevant.
The BNP Secretary General said, November 7 is an important day in politics. In 1975, martyred President Ziaur Rahman was freed from house arrest through the Sepoy-People’s Revolution. The conspirators against the country had imprisoned the martyred president. Patriotic soldiers and the people freed him from that situation. After that, a new chapter of Bangladesh’s success began in history.
He said, Martyr President Ziaur Rahman came to the center of the political arena of Bangladesh and quickly took the country to a position where, earlier, Bangladesh was called a ‘bottomless basket’, from there he raised the country to a new horizon of possibilities. It was during his tenure that the renaissance of Bangladesh began – the beginning of its emergence as an Imagine Tiger.
He said, Martyr President Ziaur Rahman was a momentous man in the political history of Bangladesh. We all know that on March 25, 1971, when the Pakistani invading army pounced on the unarmed Bengalis, that fearless military officer declared independence from the Kalurghat radio station in Chittagong on March 26.
Fakhrul said, the next five years were a history of the Awami League’s misrule. Under the leadership of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a one-party regime, Baksal, was established in the country. At that time, due to administrative failure, corruption and mismanagement, a terrible famine occurred in Bangladesh in 1974, where millions of people died of hunger. The then President of the Economic Association himself said in the presence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman that the economy of Bangladesh was going into the abyss at a rapid pace.
Mirza Fakhrul said that after 1975, martyred President Ziaur Rahman changed the situation. He initiated the first political reform – bringing the country from a one-party regime to a multi-party democracy. He ensured the freedom of the press, relaunched banned newspapers, established the independence of the judiciary, and formed the Supreme Judicial Council. He ushered in a new era in the economy. Under his leadership, the garment industry was developed, and the process of sending workers abroad began, through which remittances are one of the pillars of the Bangladeshi economy today. He took groundbreaking steps in women’s education and empowerment. A revolution occurred in agriculture through his canal digging program, import of high-yielding seeds, and reform of the fertilizer system. Production in industries started in three shifts, employment increased, new enthusiasm was created—the country was then engaged in a campaign.
‘But unfortunately, martyred President Ziaur Rahman was brutally murdered in the Circuit House of Chittagong. Yet his philosophy, his ideals still live on. The philosophy of Bangladeshi nationalism he gave has never been defeated, and therefore BNP has not been defeated either—it has risen from the ruins like a phoenix again and again,’ he said.
Mirza Fakhrul said that just as martyred President Ziaur Rahman united the nation, today his successor Tarique Rahman is also trying to unite the nation from a distant exile. Tarique Rahman is continuing the continuity of the struggle that was developed under the leadership of national leader Begum Khaleda Zia—showing the nation a new light of hope.
