Muktadesh Desk: Former IGP Chowdhury Mamun, a key witness in the July coup case, has been produced before the tribunal. He was produced at around 8:30 am on Monday (November 17).
The three-member International Crimes Tribunal-1 headed by Justice Golam Mortuza Majumder will announce this important verdict. The other two members of the tribunal are Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.
The main accused in the case is ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The other two accused are former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun. Among them, Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan are absconding and are currently residing in India.
After the legal arguments of the prosecution and the accused were completed on October 23, the tribunal awaited the verdict in the case.
On that day, the tribunal had said, ‘The date of the verdict will be announced on November 13. However, it (the verdict) will be announced very soon.’ In that vein, on November 13, the tribunal headed by Chairman Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumdar set the verdict date for today, November 17 (Monday).
In the verdict, the prosecution has sought the maximum punishment of death for Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and an order to confiscate their properties from the tribunal.
On the other hand, state-appointed lawyer Md. Amir Hossain has sought their acquittal on behalf of the two accused.
It is worth noting that several levels of security have been increased in the tribunal and Supreme Court area in view of Sheikh Hasina’s verdict. Along with the police-RAB, APBN-BGB, the army is deployed. Members of intelligence agencies are also on the alert.
