Muktdesh Desk: Legal Advisor Dr. Asif Nazrul said, ‘There is a sharp disagreement among the political parties regarding the referendum. The chief advisor will take a decision on this matter. However, a decision will come very soon.’
He said this at a briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Thursday (October 30).
Terming this disagreement among the parties as disappointing, the legal advisor said, ‘After 270 days of talks, this disagreement among the political parties is disappointing. Earlier there was a dispute over the content. Now there is a disagreement over the referendum. In such a situation, the parties are also playing an agitated role.’
Asif Nazrul said, ‘If any political party tries to impose its decision on the government alone, where is the spirit of July? No matter what anyone says, the elections will be held in the first half of February. However, it is not only the government’s responsibility to maintain the voting environment, but also the parties’ responsibility.
Commenting on the lack of consensus among political parties, Asif Nazrul said, “They (political parties) actually have no consensus. Earlier, we knew that there was a dispute over the content on some vital questions, there was a dispute over the subject matter of the reforms that will be implemented. Now, I have seen that two more types of disputes have arisen; one is how you will pass this (July Charter), and the other is when the referendum will be held for this.”
The legal advisor said, “If after so many discussions, you do not reach a consensus, now we really have to think a little about what we will do.”
In response to a question about the ultimatums given by political parties, the legal advisor said, “If any political party gives us an ultimatum or forces us to take their stand alone. That means there is no consensus among them and they want this government to elevate their party position. This is unfortunate. They have been given enough time for discussion. They should consider the disunity they are showing and where they have taken the July Spirit.
In response to another question, Asif Nazrul said, “We have taken the recommendations of the commission, the government has the freedom on how we will implement the recommendations. The chief advisor will decide on this.”
