Deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal have been sentenced to death in a case filed against them for crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising. The International Crimes Tribunal has reduced the sentence to 5 years in prison for another accused, former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, as a witness.
The three-member tribunal led by International Crimes Tribunal-1 judge Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder announced the verdict at around 2:15 pm on Monday. The other members of the tribunal are Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and retired District and Sessions Judge Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury. Earlier, the verdict was read out at 12:34 pm.
The tribunal said that three charges against Sheikh Hasina have been proven. The International Crimes Tribunal has sentenced her to life imprisonment on the first charge and death on the second charge.
