Manikganj: Locals have rescued a crocodile from a canal in Manikganj Sadar Upazila. The crocodile was caught in the Chowkighat area of Hatipara Union of the upazila on Friday night.
Harirampur Upazila Forest Officer Md. Shariful Islam confirmed the news on Saturday morning. He said, “I am on the spot. The crocodile will be handed over to the Wildlife Crime Suppression Unit.”
According to the Upazila Forest Department and local sources, about a month ago, local people saw the crocodile in the canal of Charbangkhuri of Hatipara Union of Sadar Upazila and Tantkhola area of Harukandi Union of Harirampur Upazila. Since then, they have been in panic. No one dared to bathe in the canal or bathe cows and goats.
Locals tried several times to catch the crocodile. Finally, around 10 pm on Friday, the people of Chowkighat village were able to catch the crocodile using special techniques. Curious people from different areas around the area gathered to see the crocodile.

Rahat Hossain and Al Amin of Chowkighat village, who participated in catching the crocodile, said that they saw the crocodile yesterday morning. They tried to catch it with a trap made of rope. When the crocodile floated in the canal water around 10 pm, they caught the crocodile with that trap.
Harirampur Upazila Forest Officer Shariful Islam said that it is initially believed that the rescued crocodile is a freshwater crocodile. Its length is about 10 feet. The matter has been reported to the Wildlife Crime Suppression Unit. The crocodile will be handed over after they arrive.
