Muktadesh Desk: A total of 2,110 crore taka of corruption has been committed in 891 projects in the climate sector from 2010 to 2024.
Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman gave this information at a press conference organized by TIB in Dhanmondi, Dhanmondi, on Tuesday at around 11:30 am.
The report said that a total of 458.5 million dollars were approved from the Bangladesh Climate Change Trust Fund (BCCT) between 2010 and 2024. Of this, 54 percent of the allocation has been estimated to have been corrupt. A trend of project approval due to collusion between members of the Board of Trustees and Technical Committee and political considerations has been observed. However, as fund managers, BCCT officials have failed to take effective steps to prevent these irregularities.
Bangladesh needs 12,500 million dollars every year to combat climate change. But from 2015 to 2023, the combined annual allocation from national and international funds was only $86.2 million, which is only 0.7 percent of the requirement.
Allocation from national funds is decreasing by an average of 8.2 percent each year, while allocation from international funds has increased by 43.8 percent.
