Muktdesh Desk: Despite the ban on student politics on the campus, the Chhatra Dal committee of Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College (SEBMC) has been announced after 11 years. Last Monday, the new 30-member committee signed by Chhatra Dal central committee president Rakibul Islam Rakib and general secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir was approved. Last Tuesday afternoon, the list of that committee was shared on Chhatra Dal’s official Facebook page. It instructed the new committee to form a full-fledged committee within the next month. However, it has been alleged that 18 people, including the committee president and general secretary, were involved in Chhatra League politics. The matter came to light last Wednesday night. This has led to intense anger and dissatisfaction among Chhatra Dal leaders and activists.
College sources said that in the wake of the students’ demands after the July 24 mass uprising, the decision of the Academic Council meeting of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College on August 11 banned politics in all student organizations.
It is learned that out of the 30 members of the newly formed committee, 18, including the president and general secretary, have been directly involved in Chhatra League politics. This has sparked a new debate on the college campus.
Sources said that Md. Asaduzzaman Prince, who is the president of the new committee, actively participated in various programs of Chhatra League during the fascist Awami League. He was seen raising slogans in favor of Awami League in several programs in the presence of the party’s State Minister for Water Resources and MP from Barisal-5 constituency Colonel Zahid Faruk Shamim. Since he was in the good eyes of the party’s top leaders, Chhatra League leaders always respected him.
Abdullah Al Fahid, who is the general secretary of the newly formed committee, was also an active worker of Chhatra League. He was seen participating in the election campaign with a team for Awami League-nominated mayoral candidate Abul Khair Khokon Serniabat in the 2023 Barisal City Corporation elections. During the election, he was present at the distribution of boat leaflets and Awami League political meetings.
In addition, the current committee of Shebamech Chhatra Dal, Vice President Zubair Al Mahmud, Fayan Alam Fahim, Shovon Deb Dutta, Senior Joint General Secretary Anwarul Hakim Adil, Joint General Secretary Ragib Mahfuz, Shaon Ahmed, Deputy General Secretary Hasibul Haque Shanto, Siam Hossain, Sheikh Asif Hasan, Literature and Publication Secretary NM Rohan, Social Media Secretary Tirtha Mandal, Education and Study Circle Secretary Rafiul Islam Shovon, Information and Research Secretary Zisan Hossain Al Deen were seen directly participating in the election campaign and political activities on behalf of former minister Khokon Serniabat.
The Vice President of the newly formed committee, Zubair Al Mahmud, participated in various processions and meetings of Chhatra League and also promoted it on the social media Facebook.
When contacted on mobile phone, the president of the newly formed committee of Shebamek branch Chhatra Dal, Md. Asaduzzaman Prince, told Amar Desh that he is in class and cannot talk now. I will talk to you later. After that, he did not answer the phone even after several calls.
Attempts to contact Abdullah Al Fahid, the general secretary of the newly formed committee of the college, could not be reached. His statement could not be taken as the phone line was repeatedly cut.
In this regard, Barisal Metropolitan Chhatra Dal Vice President Md. Sakibul Haque Russell told Amar Desh that the central leaders cannot form any committee without discussing with the leaders of Barisal Metropolitan BNP and Metropolitan Chhatra Dal. Of course, I believe that the leaders who have signing power of Barisal Metropolitan BNP and Chhatra Dal know about the new committee.
He said that there is no shortage of dedicated leaders and activists in Barisal. Dedicated leaders do not belong to any individual, they are the assets of the party. That is why they lose time and time again to the favorites of individuals. The leaders of Chhatra League have been included in the new committee by underestimating those who left due to personal preference. The leaders of Barisal Metropolitan BNP or Chhatra Dal cannot avoid the responsibility for this.
In this regard, Barisal Metropolitan Chhatra Dal President Md. Rezaul Karim Rony told Amar Desh that in the past, Shebamech Chhatra Dal was under Barisal Metropolitan Chhatra Dal. Although it was a committee, the metropolitan leaders scrutinized and selected it and gave a new committee. However, this is the first time that the committee has been announced directly from the center. He is not aware of those who have come to the new committee. If Chhatra League is rehabilitated in the committee, the leaders of the Barisal Metropolitan Committee will not take responsibility for it.
Meanwhile, a source in Chhatra Dal said that Dipu Patwary, vice-president of the central Chhatra Dal, was the team head for the restructuring of the Shebamech committee. The Chhatra Dal candidates were scrutinized and selected under his leadership. However, it was not possible to take a statement as he did not receive a call on his mobile number regarding the inclusion of Chhatra League in the committee.
