Entertainment Desk: Popular Bollywood actor and comedian Govardhan Asrani has passed away. He died on Monday after suffering from various age-related ailments for a long time. He was 84 years old. He had been admitted to the hospital for the last five days.
Asrani was born on January 1, 1940, in a middle-class Sindhi family in Jaipur, Rajasthan. His father ran a carpet shop, but Asrani was interested in acting, not the family business. He completed his education from St. Xavier’s School and graduated from Rajasthan College in Jaipur. To finance his studies, he worked as a voice artist in All India Radio.
He learned acting from Sahitya Kalabhai Thakkar between 1960 and 1962. Later, in 1964, he joined the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune.
Asrani made his Bollywood debut with the 1967 film ‘Hare Kaanch Ki Chudiyaan’, where he played the role of actor Biswajit’s friend. He also played the lead role in several Gujarati films.
However, his most memorable role was as a jailer in the film ‘Sholay’. His humorous dialogues and expressions still have a place in the minds of the audience.
In his long career, Asrani has worked with legendary directors like Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Gulzar and B. R. Chopra and has given laughter and joy to the audience in numerous memorable roles.
